Why Finding Your Style Before Dress Shopping Makes Such a Difference
One thing I wish more brides knew before starting dress shopping is this:
Finding your wedding dress in one appointment is often much harder when you don’t yet know your style, the kind of designer you love, or what sort of boutique actually fits you.
And that’s completely normal.
Most brides walk into their first appointment saying:
“I honestly have no idea what I want.”
But sometimes that can make the whole process feel far more overwhelming than it needs to be.
“I Want To Try Everything”
We hear this all the time in bridal.
A bride comes in wanting to try:
fitted,
princess,
boho,
satin,
sparkle,
lace,
plain,
sleeves,
strapless…
…all in one appointment.
At first it feels exciting, but after a while it can actually become really confusing.
You stop focusing on how you feel and start comparing completely different dresses against each other. Suddenly you’re wondering:
“Do I actually like lace?”
“Am I too plain?”
“Should I go more dramatic?”
“What if I’m choosing wrong?”
And honestly? That’s usually when dress shopping starts to feel stressful instead of special.
Your Style Is Normally Already There
The funny thing is, most brides actually do have a style already — they just don’t always realise it.
If you live in tailored blazers, neutral tones and clean fashion, chances are you’ll probably lean towards more modern, minimalist gowns.
If you love romantic details, soft fabrics and femininity in everyday life, you may naturally gravitate towards lace, florals or softer silhouettes.
Of course there are always surprises (and we LOVE when a bride falls for something unexpected), but having a rough idea of your style gives your appointment direction.
Designers Really Do Have Their Own “Feel”
This is something brides often don’t realise until they start shopping.
Different bridal designers have completely different aesthetics.
Some are very:
modern and fashion-led,
soft and romantic,
boho,
dramatic,
ultra glamorous,
timeless and classic.
Once you start noticing which dresses you repeatedly save on Instagram or Pinterest, you’ll usually realise you’re naturally drawn to certain designers over and over again.
And that helps so much.
Because instead of walking into every boutique hoping something works, you start shopping with intention.
Not Every Boutique Will Be Right For You
This is such an important one.
Bridal boutiques are curated carefully. The dresses are chosen to fit a certain bride and aesthetic.
So if your dream look is sleek, editorial and modern, but you’re visiting boutiques that mainly specialise in traditional lace ballgowns, it can leave you feeling disheartened — even though there’s nothing wrong with the dresses themselves.
It’s just not your style.
The brides who usually have the smoothest experience are the ones who take a little time beforehand to think about:
what they genuinely like,
which boutiques they connect with online,
which designers they keep coming back to,
and how they actually want to feel on the day.
It’s Okay If It Takes Time
There’s also so much pressure online now to have this huge emotional “yes” moment instantly.
Sometimes that happens.
Sometimes it doesn’t.
Sometimes finding your dress is actually about slowly refining what feels right.
Every appointment teaches you something:
what makes you feel confident,
what feels uncomfortable,
what feels too much,
what suddenly feels exactly like you.
And that’s all part of the process.
The Goal Isn’t To Try On Everything
It’s to find the dress that feels most like you.
And usually, the more aligned your style, designer choices and boutique appointments are from the beginning, the less overwhelming — and more enjoyable — the whole experience becomes.
